Time to Get Off My Butt

I have always known that exercise leads to a healthy heart. It's only in recent years that I have learned in order to have a healthy heart, you need not only exercise, but also have some type of spirituality
. The exercise part is easy for me, but it's the spirituality one that takes more work. How little did I know that I needed to work on both.
Let me backtrack.
One of the perks of being a full-time health coach is that I'm able to work out at least five times a week. I am so lucky. Back in my Wall Street days I was lucky if I got in two workouts a week. Getting up at 4:00 in the morning and commuting almost four hours every day didn't leave much energy or desire to exercise. Working out at least five times a week has me believing that I'm the bionic woman.
A few months after becoming a full-time coach and working out every day, my sister gave me a Fitbit for my birthday (a Fitbit tracks your daily steps). I was underwhelmed, to say the least. In fact, I think I was even a little insulted. After all, I was practically the bionic woman and was living a clean, green life. What did I need a Fitbit for? I was the last person who needed to count her steps. I was on the right path to a healthy heart. Maybe my sister needs a Fitbit, but me? Ummm I don't think so. The truth was, had she not been there helping me download this little piece of plastic technology, I would have returned it straight away to Best Buy and she would have never known. Instead I was stuck with this stupid thing.
I woke the next morning and clipped the Fitbit to my bra and thought nothing of it. My nephew, brother-in-law and sister (they all had one of these stupid things) "cheered" me on (in Fitbit language). I didn't need any cheering. I was one of the most active people around. I was practically the bionic woman. Wasn't I?
Well, let's say reality smacked me right on the butt. It turns out, even though I work out almost every day, I do spend a big part of the day sitting on my butt. Even though I eat as healthy as I possibly can, I do spend a big part of the day sitting on my butt. Even though I help others to lead a healthy lifestyle and show them that both eating well and exercise is so important for a healthy heart, I spend a lot of time sitting on my butt. It turns out, even though I'm a health coach, my entire family logs more steps every day because... I spend a lot of time sitting on my butt.
This stupid piece of plastic has become my best friend. I'm happy to shovel the driveway (more steps to log). I love going to the mall (counting steps while shopping almost seems like cheating). In fact, there have been nights when I dance around my bedroom to get to ten thousand steps, my daily goal.
The best thing about my Fitbit is that it holds me accountable. Even though I exercise every day to keep my heart healthy, my Fitbit lets me know the real deal. If my Fitbit only registers three thousand steps I know I need to get off my butt and get moving. If nothing else, but to keep my heart healthy, so I can stick around for a long time to drive my son crazy.
What are you doing to keep your heart healthy? Think about purchasing a Fitbit (or something comparable) to make sure you are moving and getting off your butt. Now for the Spirituality part... I'm still looking for something I can pin to my bra to help me with that.
